Nurse Starter Kit: 10 Essentials for Kenyan Nurses & Students

6 min read

Whether you're heading into your first placement or your first job, a few well-chosen tools make every shift smoother. Here's the kit experienced nurses in Kenya actually carry — and what to look for in each.

The instruments you'll use daily

Your stethoscope is the centrepiece — start with a dependable student or classic model and upgrade later. Add a pen torch for pupils, throat and wound checks (a rechargeable one saves you buying batteries), and a pair of trauma shears for cutting dressings, tape and clothing safely in a hurry.

Taking observations

A personal thermometer and, where your role calls for it, a fingertip pulse oximeter mean you're never waiting on shared equipment. If you're taking manual blood pressures, a good aneroid monitor is worth owning.

What you'll wear

Two or three sets of scrubs let you rotate through the working week without constant washing, a theatre cap for procedure areas, and — most underrated of all — proper footwear. Closed, wipe-clean, cushioned shoes are the difference between finishing a shift comfortably and limping home.

The extras that make a difference

A small personal first-aid kit, a fob watch or second hand for counting rates, and a notebook round out the kit. Keep everything labelled — shared spaces have a way of absorbing unlabelled equipment.

Frequently asked

What should a nursing student buy for placement?

Start affordable: a student stethoscope, a pen torch, trauma shears and a couple of scrub sets will cover most placements. Upgrade your stethoscope once you qualify or specialise.
